Melissa Presents at SIETAR USA

Melissa greatly enjoyed this year’s Society for Intercultural Education, Training, and Research conference in Portland, Oregon. Here’s a quick recap:

Alongside attending enriching workshops and engaging in stimulating conversations with my respected colleagues, I also had the opportunity to deliver two poster sessions on my new intercultural children’s book, “Luminarias Light the Way!”

This book, which I self-published as part of my Master’s in Intercultural Relations degree at the University of the Pacific, aims not only to be an interesting story for children, their parents, and their teachers, but also was written with the aim of showing other intercultural practitioners what a model for such a book might look like.

As a result, I focused not just on the broad values of diversity and appreciation but went deeper to explore what skills are involved in building relationships across cultures and how it is that children can actually develop them.

It was such a delight to share my experience with other students and professionals in the intercultural field, and my hope is that more people will pick up their pen (or keyboard) and consider telling a new story from their own perspective.

Thank you to the committee for selecting this presentation, to the participants who joined the talks, and to Kia Lor who graciously assisted and even took this photo! (Photo may not be reused without written permission).
